Buffy Coleman — The Motivational Speaker

Coleman addresses six major issues:

1. Drug Awareness

Coleman speaks to kids about the dangers of drugs and how drugs can detour them from accomplishing their dreams and goals. He also tells them about his life story of where he had three close childhood friends and how the three friends chose to sell and use drugs during high school, which helped him make his choice of ending his friendship with them. He stresses the importance of not giving in to peer pressure from his life experience.

2. Character Issues

Coleman speaks to kids about having a good attitude. He addresses the fact that if one has a good attitude it will open numerous doors in life. He stresses the importance of respecting people—most importantly parents, principals, teachers, coaches or anyone that would have authority over them. He explains how even though he has played for a world famous team and has traveled the country, he still has to respect other people. He also informs the kids that if they respect higher authorities, it will carry on in life after school. He encourages students to follow school rules and be submissive to higher authority, which is part of being a responsible citizen.

3. Motivation on Being Successful

He helps the kids to understand that indeed he is a true success story. Standing only 5ft.-7in. tall, he has been able to do something that most short people aren’t supposed to do and that is to play professional basketball. He speaks about the fact that he was discouraged as a youngster to play basketball because of his height and how he persevered and defied the odds and became successful. Coming from the small town of Heflin, Louisiana, he explains how he was discovered by the Harlem Globetrotters by sending them a video tape of himself to their management. He was invited to their 1993 Training Camp where a pre-existing injury was aggravated but he redeemed himself and sent a video to Todd Davis, the Chairman and President of the World Famous Harlem Wizards in Secaucus, New Jersey, who signed him. He ended up spending two great seasons with them. Ultimately, Coleman has always wanted to become an entrepreneur while making his own impact in the entertainment business and he accomplishes this by changing the lives of kids all over the country through the Buffy Coleman Basketball Show since 1998. What a success story!!

4. Staying in School

Staying in school and obtaining an education is very important and no one knows this better than Buffy Coleman. He informs kids that although he makes a living being a professional basketball performer, he could not make it in life without having an education. He stresses that if they drop out of school all of their dreams will end. He explains to students the importance of developing listening and communication skills, and how it is a form of education. He tells them the importance of being observant of anything that they want to gain knowledge of, and how networking and communicating with a successful mentor, can help them to learn a valuable skill or trade.

5. Anti-Violence and Anti-Gun

Buffy talks about the importance of restraining from fighting and violence because it can result in one going to prison or dying.

Buffy encourages students to not bully other students or people because it can lead to a violent catastrophic ending.

He tells students that bullying other people can scar them emotionally for the rest of their lives and could prevent them from living a productive life.

6. Staying fit

Obesity has become a national epidemic for our youth today. Buffy encourages students to be health-conscious and to do some type of daily exercise of their choice to stay fit.
